Garden Tips

  One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet.

 One cubic yard covers approx. 108 square feet 3 inches deep.

  Three inches is the recommended depth for most ground covers.     

 One Unit = 7.5 yards.  

  One pallet of sod weighs approximately 2700 pounds. 

 Full pallets of sod slabs = 400 square feet per pallet.

  Weed Control   

How does bark act as a weed barrier?  First, it only works if you remove existing weeds.  Second, it will do just the opposite if you only apply an inch or so.   The idea is to completely block out the sun rays and prevent your base soil from mixing with the bark.  Weed, level and pack your ground, then apply bark 3 to 4 inches deep.  Check bark depth annually in the spring.

  Mowing  

Mow your lawn regularly, (1-1/2 to 2 inches) never removing more than one third of the grass height per mowing.  Keep your mower blade sharp.  Dull blades will rip the leaves leaving them with whitish tips.   IMPORTANT- Central Oregon hot summers are brutal on turf.  During 80-100° weather, set your mower on the very highest setting.

  The Last Lawn Mowing 

The last lawn mowing of the year is important.  It should be short to keep the long blades of grass from compacting and fostering a place for disease. Keep leaves and needles away from matting grass and remove leaves or needles on the grass over the winter. 

  Fertilizing

Fertilize your lawn:  One month after installation / At the first sign of spring, or the first of April / At the first sign of winter, or the first of November / In the summer as needed.  During the summer months, if your lawn does not require mowing at least once a week or if it lacks a rich dark green color, it should be fertilized using   6 to 7 pounds per 1000 square feet of a balanced fertilizer.  Your lawn may need this application 2 or 3 times throughout the summer.

We recommend watering your lawn with at least an inch after applying fertilizer.  We recommend using a spinner broadcast spreader, either a shoulder or a push type. 

  Aeration   

Plugging or Aeration is your best insurance of a healthy lawn.  We do recommend plugging your lawn every year after the first year.  Plugging and thatching are often recommended.  It is our opinion that most home owners only have time to do one of these treatments and it should be plugging.  After all, in most cases plugging breaks the thatch layer.  Remember when you plug- more holes the better, do not be shy.  Most rental companies rent plugging machines.  Our landscaper page lists several companies that aerate lawns.  Spiked shoes don't do much, but big metal bars punched into the ground, work well for small areas.

Why does plugging work?  Think of how composting works.  Oxygen & Moisture are the main actuators in composting.  If you do not turn or inject oxygen into a compost nothing will happen.  The same with lawn problems. Almost all are soil related & have little to do with the actual blades of grass.  Stress spots, animal spots, and funguses all respond well to aeration.
